Talk on rabies is July 26 in East Granby

(Press Release)

Dr. Kathy Kudish, Deputy State Public Health Veterinarian at the Connecticut Department of Public Health, is coming to East Granby on July 26 to help us learn how to protect ourselves and our pets from the uncommon, but fatal, disease of rabies.  She'll answer such questions as:
how common is rabies in Connecticut and in the rest of the world? When did rabies become a problem in the northeast? Which animal species can get rabies? How long is the incubation period for the disease to develop? Under what circumstances should a person seek rabies prevention if bitten? What are the symptoms to watch for in our pets?

In the past two decades, there has been an increase of rabies among wild animals in Connecticut. It has been found in every county of the state.  Since 2000, there have been at least 6 incidences of rabies in East Granby involving 1 skunk, 1 gray fox, and 4 raccoons.  Dogs who contract rabies from infected wild animals are the primary source of transmission to humans.
Sponsored by the East Granby Land Trust and the East Granby Public Library, Kathy's talk will take place at the East Granby Public Library on July 26, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the large meeting room.  The program is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required, but would be appreciated to help with seating plans. Please call the library at 860 653-3002 or Jeanne Dube at 860 658-9331 for more information or to register.

East Granby Farmers Market opens for second summer

(Press Release)

Every Wednesday, from now through Sept. 26, people from East Granby and surrounding communities gather to shop at the East Granby Farmers Market, now in its second year.

Lee Sandora, chair of both the Farmers Market Committee and the Economic Development Commission, attributes its success to being a truly community centered project – vendor proceeds benefit the East Granby Public Library – and its atmosphere.  "It's a great gathering of people from East Granby and surrounding towns – people get talking to each other, enjoying free entertainment, and it also helps the businesses at the Center Shops".

The Committee has been particularly sensitive to potential disruptions to businesses located at the Center Shops, and this year has started a Center Shops Business of the Week, featuring information and discount offers at the Managers Tent for a different Center Shops business each week.  Mike Fish of S. J. Fish & Sons, Inc. generously offered his parking lot to host the market, and so far the businesses located there have benefited.

The Market's 2012 business sponsors are:  Allstate Records Storage, Delta Industries, East Granby Chamber of Commerce, First National Bank of Suffield, Galasso Materials, LLC, Joining Technologies, Kinsley Power Systems, Northwest Community Bank, Nufern, RSCC/Rockbestos, and Simtech, Inc.

Other businesses providing services, discounts or other assistance are:  AdEmbroidery, Inc., AmeriCan, The Granby News, The Granbys Patch, Paine's, Inc., and SIGNSplus.

In addition to its sponsorship, Northwest Community Bank this year provided additional funding for a portable sound system and tent for the musicians who keep Market customers entertained each week.    "Our entertainers are very pleased this year that they can be heard throughout the Market", said publicity director Tami Zawistowski.  "Since they donate their services and play for tips, we like to keep them comfortable and happy.  We were elated when East Granby Branch Manager, Annelise Hurley, stepped in and said that Northwest Community Bank would pay for the improvements", she added.

"It's an all-volunteer effort.", said Sandora.  "Our Committee members spend a lot of time on organizing the Market, and we're very grateful to our market day volunteers, our public works department, our excellent vendors who make this all possible, and of course all the market customers who turn out every Wednesday."  Several of the Market's vendors have called East Granby their most profitable market.

Members of the 2012 Farmers Market Committee are:  June Cameron, Jonathan Griffin, First Selectman Jim Hayden, David Holl, Sophie Huget, Melien Lavoie, Library Director Lisa Salazar, Lee and Marie Sandora, and Tami Zawistowski.  Cathy Card, Branch Manager of First National Bank of Suffield, is the Center Shops business coordinator.

East Granby Farmers Market is open every Wednesday from 3:30-6:30PM at the Center Shops, located at the corner of Routes 20 and 187.  For more information or if you would like to volunteer, see the Market's website at www.eastgranbyfarmersmarket.com, email eastgranbyfarmersmarket@gmail.com or call Market Manager Lisa Salazar at the East Granby Public Library, 860-653-3002.  For ongoing Market news and frequent updates, like the Market's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/EGFarmersMarket.
